Throughout time men have sought to groom themselves to illustrate and render the attitudes and characteristics of their personalities. They have relied on beauty professionals, such as they were, from the wig-makers of the classical period to the idea of the modern barber in the 19th century. Throughout time men have always gone to their personal beauty consultant to achieve the look they desired. Within the last decade or so we have started to take control of our own styling. More men are styling their hair with the same care and dedication as women have been known to. This has encouraged stylists to educate their male clients on all products and styling tools, as well as how to use them.

As styles and trends have been changing, so has client involvement in their own look. If you want that pompadour, you have to know which products to use and how blow-dry your hair. Your stylist should be well educated and able to guide you! If you aren’t getting the attention from your stylist to recreate the look you want at home, you’re not getting the service you deserve. Long gone are the days when one product (gel that dries concrete hard) is the end-all-be-all of styling. It’s time that men start getting the education they need to look their best. Online articles or YouTube videos can be a starting point, and an invaluable one at that! At the end of the day, though, this is best coming directly from the person who has their hands in their hair.
Stylists have become general beauty educators for clients. We give you updates on the trends, talk to you about the texture of your hair, and discuss what that means for potential styles depending on your lifestyle, as well as how much time you have to dedicate to your look. We use this information to write a sort of “prescription” for which products work best in your hair and how to utilize them with or without a heat styling tool. We are here to teach you why you should use a blow dryer and why heat might benefit your style. How and what sealing the cuticle on the hair shaft means for your frizzy locks. Men not only deserve to know these things, they NEED to know these things.
At the end of the day, how much time you dedicate to your personal style is completely up to you. Wash and go? Great! Fifteen extra minutes to blow-dry into a voluminous disconnected pomp? Awesome! So c’mon, guys! Ask yourselves, are you getting everything you need out of your time with your stylist?
